Donating Your Body To Science

Issue 25.13

Have you ever considered donating your body to science?  Doctors, nurses, dentists, funeral directors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and others trained in a medical profession benefit greatly from this selfless decision that improves medical science and the future of humankind.

Whole body donation is not the same as organ donation.  Organ donation is an urgent transplanting of a specific organ at the time of death from one person to another.  Whole body donation is the voluntary contribution of the entire body for use in medical research and education, often leading to new medical and surgical techniques.  Whole body donations also allow research institutions to discover new ways to fight serious diseases and disorders, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, etc.

SereniCare Funeral Home is the Utah representative for several anatomical body donation companies, and we also associate with the University of Utah Body Donor Program.  Each donation company maintains their own specific set of guidelines and requirements for accepting a body, but basic guidelines state that a body must be free from any infectious disease, obesity, edema, sepsis, drug use, surgery of knees or hips, trauma, or autopsy.  Certain companies’ requirements are more rigid than others.

SereniCare Funeral Home has the contracts in place with these donation companies to assist you with all the arrangements necessary for body donation.  We handle all of the details, including removing the body from the place of death, filing all of the necessary paperwork, and providing the transportation of the body to the donation company.  In many instances these companies will even pay our funeral home fees, leaving the family with absolutely no expenses at the time of death.

Certain body donation companies allow families to hold a traditional viewing and funeral service before the deceased’s body is donated to science, while other companies take possession of the body as soon as possible after death.  Different options are available depending upon the company or organization you select.  We are body donation experts at SereniCare Funeral Home and will guide you through the many options available to you.  We handle all of the details for you in a professional and dignified manner.
