Genealogy Corner… FamilySearch Photos And Stories

Issue 24.13

You can add family photos and stories to your ancestors’ records in Family Tree at https://familysearch.org.  With the Add Photos and Stories feature, you can: Add photos of your ancestors to Family Tree, Set a portrait photo, an image of your ancestor appears with your ancestor’s name, Create and share photos through online albums or a PDF, Add stories about ancestors to the Family Tree, and See the photos and stories for your ancestors that have been added by others.

Last month I added some stories including one of my husband’s ancestors.  He had been a founder of Parowan, Utah and another descendant, whom we did not know, contacted me thanking me for adding the story.  She is in Texas.  Another relative added a link to a website with more information.  Today there are 12 photos added to that ancestor, which really brings him to life.  Even though he died in 1882, we can see his face, his family, and read about his life.  It makes genealogy and family history so much more interesting.

For now, FamilySearch Photos and Stories are in development, and its use is currently limited to members of The Church of Jesus Church of Latter-day Saints.  If you are not a Church member but would like to use the photos and stories feature, go to www.familysearch.org/invite/photos, and sign in with your FamilySearch account user name and password.  You only need to do that once.  That authorized you to use the feature.  After that, you can go to www.familysearch.org to use the feature.

This is a free service; you can store your photos online, securely for no charge.  That is amazing, upload your photos and stories and there they will stay, preserved.  Photos and stories can be added in two places: from your ancestor’s record in Family Tree or from the Photos section of FamilySearch.  It doesn’t matter which option you use; the photos or stories will appear with the ancestor’s record in Family Tree.

No more looking through files of dusty old papers, finding damaged photos, now you can scan photos and add the stories in a word processing format and then they will be easy for anyone to find and enjoy.
