Genealogy Corner… Stories On FamilySearch

Issue 29.13

Reading a story about an ancestor can really help you get to know them, pick out qualities that they may have passed along to you, and help you with trials you may be going through by putting them into perspective.  FamilySearch.org has added a feature to their Family Tree where you can add stories about your ancestors.  You can attach a photo to the story.  You can also edit or delete stories you added and add comments to stories others have written.  You can also add a story about a specific event and you can attach the story to everyone who is mentioned in the story.

You might find it useful to write your story in a word processing program before you add it to FamilySearch.org.  It might be easier to write a little at a time and change it until you are happy with what you have written.  You can then copy and paste the story into FamilySearch.org.

You cannot scan an already typewritten story and upload it, it must be in a word processing format so you will either have to retype it into a computer or use an OCR scanner to have the computer try and do it and then make the corrections.  Go to either the Photos section of FamilySearch.org or to Family Tree.

If you want to add a story using the Photos section, click Photos, and then click Stories, then click Add New Story.  If you want to add a story using Family Tree, click Family Tree.  On the fan chart or pedigree view, click on the person’s name.  On the summary card, click Stories, and click Add Story.  Then click Add New Story.

In the first box, type a title for the story. In the larger box, type or paste in the story.  Tagging lets you add the names of the people in the story.  The tags also help to link the people in the story to the same people in the Family Tree.  You can add the tags yourself or if you add a story from within Family Tree, the photo is tagged and linked automatically to the person whose record you started from.  If the story mentions more than one person, you need to tag the additional people yourself.
