Genealogy Corner… Just Do It – Part 2

Issue 36.13

Part 2

I encourage you to try this because it is so easy, interesting and fun to view, repair and source your own family within the Family Tree!

At https://familysearch.org/ to get to the tree, you click on Family Tree.  Find a deceased person on your pedigree and click on their name in blue on the tree.  An ancestor card will appear that looks like a 3 x 5 index card with their vital information.  At the bottom of that card you will see TREE and PERSON.  Click on Person to see more detail.  At the right, under RESEARCH HELP, click Search Records.  The FamilySearch system takes what information is listed under vital information and searches the Historical Records (Records indexed by FamilySearch Indexing volunteers and freely available.)

This will open in a new window in your browser IE: Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc., now you can look at both windows and go back and forth.  You may see your ancestor listed in the United States Social Security Death Index or United States Census Records or other records.  If you do recognize one of these records as your person, click on their blue name in the Search Results from Historical Records area.  This will take you to the record where you view what the indexer typed in.  At the right you will see a box that says Sources.  Here you can Attach to Family Tree by simply clicking the blue box with the paperclip and it will look for the ancestor in your tree and tell you if it sees any matches.  If it finds it you click Select and attach it to your person.

If the search doesn’t find any possible matches, at the bottom of the box it says, “Know the ID number?” where you can easily put the ID number in from your pedigree which is still open in the other window.  The ID number is the unique seven digit number assigned to each person in the system. For example: KWJ4-4LK.  Here we add the ID numbers in the box that says Enter it here: click Select and it will link the source you found to the correct person in the Family Tree!  Once you add the source, it is available for all of your family to see.
