Geek Speak… When You Are Going To Be Away

Issue 39.13

For most of our readers, this article might be best read in the Spring. But I have included things to do when you return after an extended absence. When you are going to be away from your computer for more than a week or so, here are some ideas to protect you, your data and your computer.

Before you Leave – Make sure you update the critical files and programs in your computer. This includes any Windows updates on PCs, printer updates for your brand (HP, Epson, etc.) Java and Adobe updates, and especially your anti-virus program updates. If the computer is going to be off the whole time you are gone, this may not seem important, but it helps a lot when you return.

Unplug your system and peripherals from all external cables such as phone lines, cable and power. If you run everything through a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply or Battery backup) this is less of a problem, but it is still worth doing to protect your equipment. I have a number of clients that have had damage done to their computers by direct hits on their phone, cable or power lines by lightning while they were away.

Make a complete backup of all your data, pictures, documents etc. I would do a complete backup of the whole system if possible.

Write down all passwords you use and either take them with you or store them in a safe place you can remember. Forgetting passwords to log into computers or accounts is a real pain.

When You Return – Repeat the first leaving instruction above. Those updates are important and often protect you from malicious software that can damage your system or data. The first thing I do when firing up a computer that hasn’t been used for a while is update the anti-virus.

Check that cooling fans are all working. Right after a computer has been off for an extended time is when you will likely notice a fan not turning which allows heat buildup and can easily damage your computer.

This is also a good time to be sure you are creating regular backups of your important files. It is a good time to update or change passwords and make a record of those changes. It is also a good time to have your technician do a general checkup and cleanup of your computer so it will run as well as possible.

If you have more than one computer (many now have a laptop for travel and convenience and a desktop for when they are at home), make sure the new files, pictures etc. that you have gathered while away are copied to your other computer so you have access to them.

These few simple steps can make your life easier and protect your computer. And remember to back up anything that is important to you.
