Genealogy Corner… Genealogy Now Expo

Issue 10.14

The St. George FamilySearch Library, a service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding a genealogy expo.  It will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 14th and 15th from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the St. George LDS Institute.  This is held during Dixie State University’s Spring break.  The LDS Institute is on the Dixie State University campus at 943 East 400 South.

They will have two keynote speakers Glenn Rawson and Blaine Yorgason.  Admission is free and so are all of the classes and exhibits. Plus they will have prize drawings and even a DNA class taught by yours truly.  Genealogy expos are great places to learn and get training on how to use programs, see what resources are available, ask questions to experts, and receive inspiration to get going on your family history.  After I attended my first genealogy conference I said to my husband, “Wow, I didn’t know what I didn’t know!”  There is always something new to learn in the family history field.

Glenn Rawson, one of the keynote speakers has been on radio and television.  He is known for being the voice of the inspirational stories on the Sounds of Sunday program and for being the writer, producer and host of KJZZ Television’s The Joseph Smith Papers and KSL Television’s History of the Saints TV series.

Blaine Yorgason is the other keynote speaker and he is an LDS novelist who has also written biographies.  Some of his books include Charlie’s Monument, Windwalker, One Tattered Angel, New Evidences of Christ in Ancient America and All That Was Promised: The St. George Temple and the Unfolding of the Restoration.

With FamilySearch’s new emphasis on memories and stories I would guess these two keynote speakers will expand on how stories are such an important part of family history.  Adding photos and stories to your ancestors in Family Tree lets you preserve and share your precious family memories.  Just this week I received a nice email thanking me for adding a story to one of my Uncle Bill’s ancestors that I had, this descendant had never seen it before.   I will see you at the expo.
