Cremation Garden A Welcome Community Addition… Increasingly Popular

Issue 15.14

An article recently published in The Spectrum and Daily News reported that the St. George City Council has approved a plan to build a cremation garden at the Tonaquint Cemetery.  According to the article, a plan was revealed that “included a grass area that could hold the remains of 600 cremations, along with a pedestal-shaped ossuary that could hold another 600.”

A cremation garden is a much needed addition to our community.  Cremation is steadily growing in popularity and is on its way to becoming the most-preferred method of disposition.  There are numerous reasons why people choose cremation, and the decision is a very personal one.  Several major factors influence this decision, including environmental considerations, the diminishing of religious restrictions, and economic considerations.

Options abound with cremation, thus making it an appealing choice.  An individual may select a direct cremation, meaning a cremation with no services.  Other alternatives include holding a viewing prior to cremation, a full funeral service, a memorial service, or a graveside service.  All choices can be public or private, simple or elaborate.

A cremation garden will further expand the options available for the disposition of cremated remains and will allow individuals to purchase a permanent disposition site, much like purchasing a cemetery plot for a traditional burial.  Creating a memorial for a loved one helps to facilitate the healing process for many individuals.  This option is much needed in our area and will be well received by the public.
