Genealogy Corner… Using Google Chrome Extensions With FamilySearch

Issue 17.14

Extensions are extra features and functionality that can be added to the Google Chrome browser. They only work with the Google Chrome browser and modify it.  They are written using web technologies and are downloadable through the Chrome Web Store.  https://chrome.google.com/webstore/.

The apps are not supported by FamilySearch Support. Please contact the individual app writer. They are usually free. Apps available in the chrome web store which work with FamilySearch to increase productivity:

Pandora’s Hope Chest searches your family tree and collects Temple work that is ready to request in your Hope Chest. It is an extension that helps users of the FamilySearch.org website by searching both ancestors and descendants. This one works like Pac-Man looking for Pinky and it is kind of fun to watch.

Ancestry Family Search Extension takes vital information from an Ancestry Family Tree profile page and makes it easy to search FamilySearch.org using those details. Record Seek by Real-Time Genealogical Collaboration. Tree Connect helps attach any website source to your family tree.

RootsSearch searches across multiple genealogy sites for matching records. When viewing an ancestor in an online tree or a record from a genealogy website, RootsSearch allows you to search for matching records on other genealogy record sites.

People Inspector displays people markup in a page and simplified searching for those people. People Inspector is a tool for genealogy research. It places a family tree icon in the tool bar. Clicking this icon opens a window with the names of the people in the page. Buttons for searching for that person on Google, FamilySearch, Geni, My Heritage, and We Relate make research easier.

Find-A-Record automatically detects your ancestor’s information and creates a set of buttons on the left side of the screen that allow you to search for collections in Find-A-Record that may contain your ancestor’s records.  All of these add ons help increase the functionality of FamilySearch and make it easier and more fun.
