Genealogy Corner… Records Operation Center or ROC

Issue 21.14

In the old LDS Distribution Center in the parking lot of the St. George Temple you will find the Records Operation Center or ROC. Located at 355 South 200 East in St. George is one of the Records Divisions of FamilySearch. They have a great deal of work to accomplish with ever increasing goals and needs to help people find their family. I visited the ROC and learned more about what happens there.

The ROC idea provides a facility and all that is necessary to perform work in a location where Church Service Missionaries can serve near their home. They provide a missionary opportunity that many would not otherwise have and are gaining an incredible workforce to accomplish a great deal of work. They do a number of different projects; some of these include projects for FamilySearch Indexing like setting up projects to be indexed and quality audits done at the end of the process before being published at FamilySearch.org. They do work on Wiki articles that aid patrons in their research. They do way-pointing and set up images to browse rather than search.

As microfilms are digitized in the Granite Mountain Records Vault near Salt Lake, they need to be audited for quality and the ROC missionaries help with that too. They are doing cataloging to help make digitized material searchable and they are doing various data cleanup projects for Family Tree. This is a small sampling of the work they do.

They need more help and have found that they do not require any specialized skill set. Missionaries don’t need a genealogy background or even knowledge of family history, although it does help. They train their volunteers for the work they need to do. The only things they need are willingness, a good attitude, and some minimal computer experience, like email or Facebook.

They are open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with four hour shifts. They like volunteers to commit from 6 months to 24 months and work between 16 and 40 hours per week. It is a fun, social environment. Snow birds are okay too. For more information, stop by or contact Elder or Sister Bradley at 435-652-5917.
