Genealogy Corner… How To Transfer From Ancestry DNA

Issue 25.14

Several years ago I had my son’s DNA tested at Ancestry.com. June 5, 2014 Ancestry.com announced that they will no longer sell Y-DNA and mtDNA tests. Additionally, the results from past Y-DNA tests and mtDNA tests will no longer be available after September 5, 2014.

Family Tree DNA is my favorite anyway. I used them for other testing and had much better success and results plus continuing customer support.  I went to https://www.familytreedna.com/landing/ydna-transfer.aspx to begin the process of transferring from Ancestry to FTDNA. It was $19 to transfer and that is a lot less than retesting at $169. I ordered the Transfer Y-DNA46 because we had used the Ancestry 46 marker test.

The email confirmation from Family Tree DNA included a new kit number and password for me to use.  I logged into https://www.familytreedna.com/. After I had logged in I was taken to a page with the listing of the markers such as DYS19a, DYS385a, DYS388, where I had to manually select from a drop-down list at each marker, the results I had received from Ancestry.com’s DNA test.  To find those, log into your Ancestry.com account, on the DNA tab, hover until you see the drop down and click Y-DNA and mt-DNA tests. Then you will be able to click Download all Y-DNA results and Download all mtDNA results.  This gives it to you as an Excel spreadsheet which is pretty basic with a table and the marker numbers with test your results.  You will use this to select the correct numbers from the drop-down menu for the results transfer to Family Tree DNA.

Carefully select your results. You cannot make changes after your results are uploaded. Then you will review and click to upload your results. After you have uploaded, you send an email back with your documentation and you electronically sign the release form.  This lets you join Family Tree DNA projects freely, but you will not receive matches or a haplogroup prediction. Your uploaded results will be available to the administrator of any group project you request to join and included on the project’s public page for comparison with other project members.
