Geek Speak… Free Computers for Christmas

Issue 50.14

As most of my readers know, my usual work day is spent fixing, upgrading or replacing people’s computers. As a result, I often end up with their old computer with instructions to dispose of it as I see fit.  The first thing I do is to completely erase all of their old programs, pictures, data and everything else on the hard drive by “zeroing” it. That means everything is completely overwritten and all data is destroyed. Then we start over with a new operating system. In most cases, that means installing Linux OS on the computer.

Linux is a free operating system. It is not compatible with Windows programs, but it comes with many free features and programs such as internet browsers, graphics programs and a Microsoft Office compatible suite of programs that take care of your word processor, spreadsheet and database needs as well as a presentation program compatible with Power Point. Many other programs can be downloaded, usually for free, such as games, website creators, etc.

I give these computers away free or for low cost depending on the need of the person or group that wants them and the power and capability of the computer when I am finished working on it. At Christmastime each year, I set a number of them aside to give to families or individuals that need a computer but can’t afford one. Each of these Christmas computers require a couple of hours of my time to prepare, but I hate to see something that still works get thrown in the trash. Fixing and giving them away is something I can do to help out and I like doing it.

If you know someone (or are someone) who needs one of these Christmas computers, all you need to do is contact me and explain the need. I can also supply a free keyboard, but you may need to buy a mouse as I have a limited number of used ones on hand. If a monitor is needed, you can either purchase a used one from me or a thrift shop or pick up a new one, either from me or a store.

The only requirements I have of those wanting one of these computers is that they pick it up (or have someone else who can pick it up) from my home in La Verkin and they must understand that I can not give any warranty with them since I make no money on them and have already donated significant free time and sometimes new parts to the project.  You can call me at 435-668-7118.

Many people have found they like Linux as well as Windows 7 and even more like it better than Windows 8 because it is relatively virus free and easy to use (as well as not costing anything and using mostly free programs). In most cases, you can install it on your computer in addition to your normal OS and have both available if you like.

Have a wonderful holiday season – and remember to always back up anything on your computer that is important to you.
