Genealogy Corner… FSFamily Tree User Group

Issue 3.15

It’s a great time to work on your family history. A growing number of websites have made it easier than ever before and discoveries are much more likely.

One of the best family history sites is FamilySearch.org. You may have used this website that includes Family Tree, which is a community family tree where users can share information and collaborate with others. FamilySearch.org also includes an extensive collection of online records, making it easy to find information about your ancestors.

FamilySearch is constantly being improved, which is great, but it can be overwhelming at times. In addition, some basic skills are needed to make the best use of FamilySearch.org and other family history sites.

A group of experienced users and instructors felt a need to provide up-to-date training and teaching materials, and they have created a website to assist others. The website is http://fsfamilytreeusergroup.com.

If you have questions about using Family Tree or are looking for ideas on how to teach others, this is a good place to start. Visit the site and explore. There’s no charge.

On this site you’ll find instructional materials on basic topics like these:

Family Tree overview

Adding and editing records

Adding sources from FamilySearch Historical Records and other sites

Adding memories

There are also materials on more advanced topics, such as the following:

Doing descendancy research

Indexing

Submitting ordinances

A novel way to use the Family Tree source box

Separating incorrectly merged or combined records

How to use records to make solid findings about your ancestors

The well-known blog by James Tanner, Rejoice and be exceeding glad http://rejoiceandbeexceedingglad.blogspot.com/ recently reviewed this site and recommends it as a good resource for learning about Family Tree. Several presentations on the site can also be found in the FamilySearch Learning Center, https://familysearch.org/learningcenter/home.html

Take a moment to visit the site and see what it has to offer. You’re sure to find something of value for your family history work.

Good luck with your family history and have fun doing it. Thanks to Kent Jaffa for this information.
