Genealogy Corner… FamilySearch Updates

Issue 27.15

If you have logged into https://familysearch.org/tree lately, you have noticed some changes. The family members section of the person details page has been restyled to match the new Landscape pedigree view. The first stage is to make the boxes and entries look more like the landscape view. There are also a few changes to make it easier to use on mobile devices. This change is the first step in a series of improvements FamilySearch is making to manage relationships.

I was helping FamilySearch edit the Help Center articles and it is a lot easier now. You click the edit icon instead of having to hover over the child until you see edit parents and then click edit parents when you really want to edit the child’s relationship to the parents. The edit icon is a great improvement. Now in the marriage box, you will see a little box with a pencil in it and that is the edit icon. If you want to edit a marriage relationship, standardize the date, add a source, or anything, just click the edit icon. To edit a child’s relationship instead of having to hover and click, you just click the edit icon. It is much more intuitive.

FamilySearch also added a way to add a child on the landscape pedigree view. At the bottom of the list of a couple’s children drop down, you will find Add Child. They renamed the hinting box again. It is now Research Help. Research help is now search records. The search records link within the box went from Search Records to FamilySearch.org. They did that because soon, there will be other options to search from within Family Tree, such as Ancestry.com and the other partners. I am thrilled with that new feature. Clicking FamilySearch.org searches all of the records that have been indexed so far. The record hints will give you some matches, but not all of them, so the FamilySearch.org search is very beneficial.

The FamilySearch mobile apps have been updated to allow you to delete people, add, add to the watch list, search historical records and view your relationship. Some other features will be coming in July.
