Genealogy Corner… Searching For Family

Issue 33.15

Doing family history is fun and challenging. Here are some ideas to be efficient and have a rewarding experience. At https://familysearch.org/ask/ you can find the Help Center and customer service to get help anytime. You can let someone you trust enter your family history information for you onto FamilySearch.org, or do it yourself.

Getting organized is optional, but recommended. Before starting, you could make or print a ten generation chart as a baseline. Then, you can see ancestral progress by doing it again and comparing. If there is already a lot of information in FamilySearch Family Tree, you can print a fan chart for yourself, and then for the other generations that continue. This is a good way to see where you have research to be done.

If you want to see your statistics and find things to do, see the logged in home page at https://familysearch.org/lihp-a. This new logged in home page has a to-do list available. It also has a recommended task section to provide ideas of what to do next. For each relative you want to make sure stays correct, or you want to know if someone makes any changes to them, click the star to watch them. Doing this will generate a weekly email of any changes.

We never know when our relatives will pass away. Be sure you have interviewed your relatives, especially the older relatives. Capture important stories before they are lost by recording audio while they talk and tell the stories. FamilySearch Memories is available to help you with this. There is an app available.

Upload the resources and records you have on hand. This includes photos, stories, audio and documents. Scan the documents so they are on the computer or a smartphone. Upload it to FamilySearch on the memories tab. https://familysearch.org/photos/. You can use Google Drive or DropBox and create storage on the cloud. This way you have off site storage. If you upload to FamilySearch, you can attach the memories to each relevant person in the Family Tree on FamilySearch, adding people as needed.

https://www.findarecord.com/en/ is another great way to find things that need to be done. Sign in with your FamilySearch account.
