Genealogy Corner… Pop-up blockers and FamilySearch

Issue 38.15

When new browsers and operating systems are released, such as the new Windows 10, Internet Explorer being replaced by Microsoft Edge, the upgrade of the Google Chrome browser, and the upgrade of the Firefox browser, the trusted sites need to be edited and added. These browsers have automatic pop-up browsers, and they even block FamilySearch.org from giving you pop-ups that you want and need. This includes FOR pdf requests.

A pop-up blocker running on your browser can interfere with the functionality of the FamilySearch websites. To allow pop-ups from FamilySearch, use the instructions below for the browser(s) you use.

Microsoft Edge uses the same settings as Internet Explorer 11. On the menu bar, click Tools. (If you do not see Tools or the Menu Bar, right-click to the right of the last tab, and click Menu Bar. Click Internet Options. Click the Privacy tab. In the pop-up blocker section, click Settings. Enter *.familysearch.org into the box that says Address of website to allow. Click Add to allow pop-ups from all FamilySearch sites. Click Close.

Mozilla Firefox. Click Tools (if you do not see Tools or the Menu Bar, right-click to the right of the last tab, and click Menu Bar. Click Options. Go to the Content tab. To the right of Block pop-up windows, click Exceptions. Enter *.familysearch.org into the box that says Address of website. Then click Allow to allow pop-ups from all FamilySearch sites. Click Close.

Google Chrome. Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar. The Chrome menu is three lines in a row that kind of look like a Big Mac. Click Settings. Click Show advanced settings at the bottom of the page. In the Privacy section, click Content settings. In the Pop-up section, click Manage exceptions. Type familysearch.org in the Hostname pattern field, and click Done.

Safari for Windows users can select Edit and then Preferences. Mac users, click Safari and then Preferences. Click Security at the top of the window. Click the box Block pop-up windows to enable blocking of pop-ups. Uncheck to disable.

Doing this should help when you need to print forms that open in pop-up windows on FamilySearch.
