Genealogy Corner… Updates To FamilySearch And Family Tree

Issue 8.16

Family Tree released updates that include the option to invert colors on the Descendancy view. Instead of having black text on a light gray background, you can now have white on a dark gray background. This helps with eyesight. This also affects the Add People Icon. They recently added the option of adding new people to the Descendancy view. The invert colors option is I the Show menu like it is for the Landscape view.

I like using the Descendancy view to find ancestors that need to have some work done, to add sources and see any possible record or data problems.  Try opening your pedigree and going out to an ancestor born in the 1800’s and then build their pedigree. Then change to the Descendancy view. It looks like two circles with a line coming down below the circles and the top one is attached to the bottom circle to form the icon. It is the one of the right, or View: Descendancy. Once you are on the Descendancy view, find the Generations: 1 2 3 4 and click 4. That will open up four generations of descendants of the person you are on. Colored boxes will appear to the right of each ancestor letting you know what is needed, if there are Record Hints available, if there are Research Suggestions or Data Problems. It is a great way to go in and clean up a family and find more information.

FamilySearch has released to 109 temple districts the ability to print family ordinance cards from home. Instead of having to get them printed at the temple, you will now be able to print the cards at home. There is a knowledge document in the help center with explanations, it is number 362434. They will continue to release this process to additional non English speaking temples.

An update to the Memories section has been made with a new gallery format. All memories formats for photos, documents, audio, stories and albums will be merged into a single gallery. There will still be the option to view one memory type if you want. This will help reduce confusion between photos and documents and to be able to see what has already been uploaded. It also provides additional sort options and the ability to select multiple memories, across different types, and perform specific functions like deleting or adding to an album. You also can upload directly to an album and the master list for the account.
