Genealogy Corner… Adding To And Correcting Family Tree

Issue 9.16

It is important to correct individual and relationship records on the pedigree using correct actions one must take when adding new data and correcting errors. Adding and editing must come after attaching multiple sources that prove your claims. Data from non-FamilySearch online databases or from old family records cannot be considered reliable sources. Placing a Watch on your records will inform of any changes, and the Latest Changes log is the place to undo large errors.

In FamilySearch Family Tree you can add and edit a person on the Person’s Detail Page. You can edit or add the following: Life Sketch, Vital Information data including names, dates and places standardized; Other information, clean up duplicate data; Family Members Section for relationships, add, edit or delete; Source Field, all data, remove Legacy nFS sources with no information; Discussions: Add to or review them when needed; Notes: Add to and delete Notes when needed. Use them for research.

Most people know their parents and other immediate family members but are unsure of the great grandparents and further back. Try to learn to name all eight of your great-grandparents and where they were born. Look in FamilySearch Family Tree and see if they are there. See if they have any blue clue boxes that can be attached. See if they have any record problems. See if there are sources there that prove the relationships. Can you prove who your grandfather’s parents were with the sources attached to him in Family Tree?

Work through your family, one generation at a time, adding sources and correcting as you go. Look for record hints and any problems. Look for missing children. Check for standardized birth dates and places, death dates and places, and marriage dates and places on each one of them. See if they need to be corrected. See if they need sources attached. Make sure the dates shown are proven by the sources from original records if possible. See if any of your ancestors need any work done on them.
