Genetic genealogy educators and bloggers Blaine T. Bettinger, Ph.D., JD, and Debbie Parker Wayne, CG, CGL, announced May 3 that Genetic Genealogy in Practice, the newest book in the National Genealogical Society’s Special Topic Series. GGP will be available for purchase in mid-summer 2016.
Genetic Genealogy in Practice is directed to genealogists of all levels, from beginner to intermediate to advanced. For the very first time, GGP offers hands-on exercises in areas of Y-DNA, mtDNA, X-DNA, atDNA, the Genealogical Proof Standard, ethics, and more. Genealogists can test their understanding and expertise in each of these subject areas via 75+ hands-on exercises, and will receive immediate feedback from an answer key that provides detailed explanations for every exercise.
With GGP, genealogists will finally be able gauge their understanding of DNA and how it can be applied to genealogical research. Through the exercises provided in GGP, genealogists will not only identify weak spots in their genetic genealogy education and experience, but will be able to strengthen those weak spots with hands-on experience.
Why is Genetic Genealogy Education Important?
There is no question that DNA evidence is increasingly important to genealogists at all levels. Just as census records, probate records, and tax records must be consulted when they are available and can shed light on a genealogical question, DNA evidence must be obtained and used when it is available and can provide information regarding a genealogical question. For example, since misattributed parentage occurs at an appreciable rate, DNA evidence is increasingly necessary to confirm even the most documented and researched pedigrees. DNA evidence can also help examine some genealogical questions that appear nearly hopeless with traditional genealogical research. GGP provides genealogists with the information and skills necessary to obtain, analyze, and apply that DNA evidence.
