Genealogy Corner… Worldwide Indexing Event 2016

Issue 26.16

Soon, you can watch athletes break records, but you can also preserve a different kind of record for generations to come. During 72 hours from July 15 to 17, help us index the world’s historical records, making them freely searchable on the Internet and helping families worldwide find their ancestors. Join us as we “rewrite” history.

Whether you’ve indexed before or are new to indexing, you’re invited to participate in the annual Worldwide Indexing Event July 15–17, 2016, sponsored by FamilySearch.org.

Indexing is the process of entering information from the world’s digitally scanned historical documents into a database, making it easily searchable online. Anyone with a computer and Internet connection can index, and for many volunteers, the activity is not only fun; it becomes almost addictive. Go to https://familysearch.org/indexing/get-started-indexer where you can download the indexing program. Then click Run or Open to begin the installation. Locate the FamilySearch Indexing icon on your desktop, and double click the icon to open the program. Click Register for a New Account and follow the steps to get registered or sign in with your FamilySearch or LDS Account. You do not need to be an LDS member to index.

The goal for this year’s event is for at least 72,000 people to come together and index as many batches as possible during the 72 hours between July 15 to 17.

Currently FamilySearch.org offers 20 times more searchable records in English than in all other languages combined. So if you have fluent language skills in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, or other languages, your help is especially needed.

According to Mike Judson, manager of FamilySearch’s indexing workforce development, “We need tens of thousands of volunteers with well-developed language skills to step forward and use those talents to bless others’ lives. We have the records—now we just need the hands.”
