Genealogy Corner… Google’s New Photo Scan

Issue 50.16

Google has created a new app that will scan your photos and automatically remove imperfections and there is no scanner needed. It is the coolest app!  PhotoScan is a new smartphone app used to take a picture of your pictures. It will snap photos of those old pictures you have stored in photo albums or in envelopes or boxes. It will snap photos of pictures of photos at your Aunt’s house that you would like to have copies of! It will then create enhanced digital scans, with automatic edge detection, perspective correction, and smart rotation. Even better, it also automatically recognized the four corners of the frame and displays circular overlays on each corner of the scanned image. You then point your phone camera at each circle, create a robust scan of the image, and PhotoScan gets to work from there.

PhotoScan eliminated reflections and other aspects of digital deterioration. If you have ever tried to take a picture of a picture, it always has a bright spot in it or a shadow of the phone or you or something. This app solves that. PhotoScan stitches together a single image from those several overlapped photos, making sure to eliminate any glare-infected shots while evening out the overall exposure like magic. Once it is captured, a photo is backed up online and added to your Google Photos library, where the app offers its standard face-recognition and manual enhancement tricks.

PhotoScan is available free of charge for Android and Apple iOS cell phones and tablets in your smartphone’s app store. You can read more about the new PhotoScan app at www.google.com/photos/scan. Try it out, you will love it! Then you can go to https://familysearch.org/photos/ and upload your photo and tag it to the people in Family Tree where it will be preserved indefinitely.
