Dear Ben,… Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Issue 39.13

Thank you again readers for the great questions.  Call or write me with questions about your cabinets, wood floors, and wood fixtures in your home.  My contact information is at the end of this article.

Dear Ben:  What’s a quick way to change the look of my kitchen?

DEARQUICK CHANGE:  Changing the look of your kitchen does not always require major changes such as replacing old cabinets, accessories and equipment with new. By doing little things like repainting your old kitchen cabinets, you can enjoy a great change in your kitchen.

Painting your old cabinets as a DIY project may take longer than hiring a professional, but is manageable and doable for the homeowner who loves a project. When hiring a professional you can expect the job done in a couple of days to a week. Not a major amount of time compared to other home improvement projects. Do your homework on the type of products you or your professional use to lower the health risks, dust, mess, time, convenience and to get quality results. Over the years I have been to many homes where normal “house paint”  was used on cabinets. This is not a good option, the paint is  peeling, stained and bubbled.  Lacquers and enamels can be used but with some health and mess concerns. Newer  water based polyurethanes are a safe and cleaner option for most cabinet painting applications. Consult a professional and make the quick change to a new look in your kitchen.

Thanks for the great question!
