Genealogy Corner… 5 Minute Genealogy Is A Hit!

Issue 32.11

Sometimes I run into people who have read my column.  Occasionally they will tell me, “I read your article every week, but it goes swoop.” And they make the sign that shows the information is going right over their head.  So, l will make it really simple this week!

5 Minute Genealogy is a new series of short videos posted on YouTube and FamilySearch.org that is being created by members of the Publications and Instructional Design Team at FamilySearch.   Jessie Davis is featured as the host in each of the episodes.  YouTube and FamilySearch.org are sites on the Internet and both of them are free.

The goal of the series is to reach people who have some interest in family history, and to break down barriers to getting started.  They actually are really basic and I know that about anyone will be able to learn from these short videos.

The series is all about doing genealogy, five minutes at a time. In fact the first one is called “Finding A Record In Five Minutes.”  Each episode is designed to help people just getting started in family history. The viewer will learn new steps, be shown others who have experienced success, and assimilate the new information by completing a 5-minute challenge.

The first four episodes were posted on May 27, 2011. In just about one week’s time, nearly 11,000 views had been recorded. In addition to the first four episodes, more are available now for viewing, additional episodes are in production.

The full set of episodes will be developed throughout 2011, and all 24 5-minute episodes will be delivered this year. Each episode covers topics that a beginner needs to know to get started.

The series follows a process of:

1.       Gather – what you know.

2.       Choose – what you want to learn.

3.       Find – a record.

4.       Evaluate – what you’ve found.

5.       Share – Your new information
