Genealogy Corner… Genealogy Conference

Issue 8.13

I still remember the first time I attended a genealogy conference.  It is like a convention, a trade show, and a great learning experience all rolled into one.  I was amazed as I learned that I didn’t know what I didn’t know.  There were many things to learn, and there always are, especially recently when so many new technological advances are being made.

We have a great opportunity to attend a conference right here in St. George, Utah at The Dixie Center.  Holly T. Hansen, the president of Family History Expos, Inc., a friend of mine, comes to St. George each year with a spectacular conference at a fraction of the price of large conferences, but every bit as informative and well done.

This year she has James L. Tanner giving the keynote address.  He has been actively involved in genealogical research and is the blogger for Genealogy’s Star Blog.  He is a featured blogger at RootsTech each year and is on the support staff of the FamilySearch Research Wiki, plus he moderates there for Arizona and Utah.  He is the author of The Guide to FamilySearch Online.  We can learn a lot from this opening keynote alone.

Other classes she has scheduled that caught my attention are FamilySearch Photos Beta by Timothy G. Cross.  Tim works for FamilySearch so it should be the latest information.  She has Gaylon Findlay of Ancestral Quest, Geoff Rasmussen of Legacy and Tom Kemp of Genealogy Bank and several other well- known genealogical speakers who will give you cutting edge information right from the who’s who of genealogy.

Holly also has FamilySearch Staff coming to teach you the latest information on FamilySearch.org, FamilySearch Family Tree as it replaces new FamilySearch, and a new class called “Making Your Temple Experience More Sacred: Tying Family History to the Temple.”

The conference website is www.familyhistoryexpos.com and then click on St. George Family History Expo.  The fun begins Friday, February 22, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. and continues Saturday Feb. 23.  Save money by pre-registering online then prepare your schedule and read the agenda and handouts.
