Genealogy Corner… Memorial Day Preparation

Issue 22.13

Would you like to learn some creative ways to honor your ancestors? In preparation for Memorial Day, a panel of four family history experts came together in a Google+ On Air Hangout to discuss ways to honor your ancestors. In this excerpt, Fran Jensen, walks through many of the methods she has used to honor her ancestors. The full hangout also covers:
Using the BillionGraves website to capture gravestone images
Gathering and preserving the memories of our living family members
Scrapbooking our family’s history
Preserving family traditions

If you are out visiting cemeteries this Memorial Day, don’t forget to check http://www.findagrave.com/ and or http://billiongraves.com/ to see if anyone has taken photos of the graves at that particular cemetery.  They may need updates of new graves, or they may need to be photographed and uploaded and you could help.  This makes an interesting activity for teenagers as they can use iPhones and upload immediately to Billion Graves.  This also adds the GPS tracking to make it easier for others to find the gravesite in the future.

You can visit the FamilySearch Google Plus hangout at https://plus.google.com/s/familysearch  You can also visit You Tube free by going to www.youtube.com and type familysearch in the search box or go directly to http://www.youtube.com/user/FamilySearch

It is amazing to see all of the resources online that only a decade ago were not even ideas.  We can learn so much just by taking the time to go online and look for these tutorials and training.

There are many instructive videos and interactive lessons that can help you in using the different FamilySearch web sites and doing other Family History tasks. In order to access the presentations, visit: http://www.lds.org/topics/family-history?lang=eng
