Geek Speak… Musings Of A Musician/Computer Geek

Issue 41.13

Once in a while, authors like to communicate with their readers on a less informational basis. Today I want to tell you a little about me and why I do what I do. We all wear a lot of different hats in our lives and I have the slightly crazy habit of wearing a few of them at the same time. I often have people tell me when I arrive at their door to do computer service that they recognize me from my performing at the Bumbleberry Theatre in Springdale or from my campaign for US Senate last year. Likewise, when people come to see the shows where I play piano and sing, they tell me they read my articles on computers. It is a lot of fun because all of these activities are things I am passionate about.

I think I should interject here that the shows I am performing in at the Bumbleberry Theatre in Springdale end in two weeks so, if you want to see them, you should hop on up there right away. They are wonderful weekend shows and a lot of fun to watch and to perform in.

I do not see myself primarily as a salesman or even a computer repairman. I also don’t consider myself as a great performer/piano player/singer, though I do love all those things. I consider myself as more a teacher than any of the other things I do. I have a degree in education, taught in the public schools for a few years and have been involved in education most of my life – most recently teaching teenagers at the private commonwealth school in St. George part time.  This love of teaching infuses all that I do. It is why I write these articles – to help people understand more about technology and specifically their computers. I try to always make them informative and interesting as well as occasionally fun. When I work with people on their computers, I always attempt to help them know how they can get the most out of their technology and how they can avoid problems.

When I am performing, I am always trying to bring a little fun and excitement to the audience, even while I am working to help the younger performers be their best and doing whatever I can to make the productions great for those who attend. Even when I ran for public office, it was not specifically with the idea that I could actually win (I knew that my small bank account was no match for the $12.3 million dollars my opponent spent). My purpose was to talk to people and get them thinking and reading and examining the direction our country is headed – to get them involved and aware so perhaps we can avoid some of the serious problems our current political course is creating.  I hope I made a difference for at least some of the people of our state.

So, when you are hiring me to help you with your computer, listening to me sing and play, talking about politics or just visiting, remember that I always hope to bring light and understanding, peace and joy to those I interact with. Ask me questions and I will be right at home trying to help you know what you need and how you can do what you want to do.

And remember that the reason for my final reminder of each article is one that matters – because I have learned and want to teach everyone that if you don’t do it, there will be a day you will be sad you didn’t. So, remember to back up anything that is important to you.
