Genealogy Corner… Hope Chest

Issue 48.16

Part 4

Hope Chest software is a tree analyzing software that works with FamilySearch Family Tree. “Request Ordinances” is by far the most used feature of Hope Chest and I would like to reemphasize the care needed when using of this part of the app. My suggestion is to verify and double check before taking the names to the temple, even if they are already on your temple list. This suggestion is backed up by the following:

“It is the disposition of many of the people to hurry their work along in an unorganized fashion because of their zeal for temple work. Patience, accompanied by prayer and thorough research, will prove best in the end.” – Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 2, p. 209.

“Because of the sacred nature of this work, members should be diligent in assuring the accuracy of all information submitted.” – First Presidency, 1995.

“Our preeminent obligation is to seek out and identify our own ancestors. Those whose names are submitted for proxy temple ordinances should be related to the submitter.” – First Presidency, 1995.

“The Lord expects you and me to perform our family history work well.… We are going to make mistakes, but none of us can become an expert … without first being a novice. Therefore, we must plunge into this work, and we must prepare for some uphill climbing. This is not an easy task.” – Thomas S. Monson, First Presidency message, June 2014.

In “Creating the Family History Center of Tomorrow,” then FamilySearch CEO Dennis Brimhall said, “The most important requirement for temple name submission, as set forth by the First Presidency, is that we have to be related.”

Hope Chest now is up to version 9 which includes a new Posterity Edition. This one automatically enables the plus features for the spouse, and all the posterity of the individual holding the license. It is $99.99. Hope Chest has table paging, to make your list more manageable and allow you to work through your list one page at a time. Help Others now works with Hope Chest, which is nice for Family History Consultants and FamilySearch Center staff. Multiple users can use Hope Chest on the same computer. The database has been optimized to improve speed and reliability. Other questions about Hope Chest may be directed to support@HopeChestSoftware.com.

I have found Hope Chest to be great. I was one of those finding it difficult to find work to do that had not already been done. I use Hope Chest to create Decendants lists based on various decendants. I now have lots of people that I can work on.
